In its present state, GESOM includes a DTD that specifies which elements are allowed in a GESOM message, and a number of suggestions of useful attribute values and content for the interesting elements, <state> and <event>, as well as the background attribute. Guidelines for the interpretation and rendering of GESOM messages is also provided. There is no formal limitation to what attribute values may be used with the <state> and <event> elements.
