Alex Waibel held a bullet course consisting of three morning talks between (9.30 - 12.00, 030616 - 030618). The talks were called Communicating in a multilingual world and CHIL - Computing to Overcome Techno-Clutter . 030616: Communicating in a multilingual world
The talk contained some things worth checking from a Higgins perspective:
- W talks about three ways in which one may want to abridge the language divide:
- Assimilation (surveillance, what is out there [Echylon, JE's comment])
- Dialogue (communication w. others)
- Dissemination (presentation of own material)
- Focus: Speech translation, computer assisted communication
- Problem: a sequence of process modules will compound errors; Solution: model uncertainty probabilistically
- Machine translation approaches:
- Direct translation - example based, statistical
- Transfer translation - build translation rules & dictionaries
- Interlingua - build semantic understanding of input
- Janus (translation) system: essentially a semantic parser and a generator [JE's comment]
- Janus' flowchart could be mapped to Higgins [JE's comment]
- Immediate generation with Undo button more appriciated than "Is this ok" question before generation, because of speed
- JRTk recogniser toolkit, free for research
- Time consumption of writing semantic grammars is one of the greatest limitations of interlingua systems (but getting good corpora is also time consuming)
