Sound examples Jones and Friberg 2023

These are the sound examples accompanying the paper

Jones, G. and Friberg (2023) Probing the Underlying Principles of Dynamics in Piano Performances Using a Modelling Approach. Submitted.

The examples have been generated using the Director Musices program, Ableton Live 10, and Pianoteq 7 physical piano model with the patch 'NY Steinway Prelude'.

These music examples demonstrate the dynamic variations for the average across pianists and the model results. The first group contains the same examples as seen in Figure 1 in the paper. However, the dynamic range has been amplified for clarity. Note that there are no timing or articulation variations, only dynamics.

Melody number 10, Toccata for solo cello by Vitali (transposed 1 octave up)

a. Mean dynamics across all pianists
b. SVR model, no CV (trained on all examples)
c. SVR model, leave-one-out (corresponding to a new melody)

Sequences of examples

a. Mean dynamics across all pianists for all 30 melodies
b. SVR model, leave-one-out for all 30 melodies
c. Individual pianists 1-10, melody number 10
