The Virtual Language Teacher

The goal of this project is to develop and test a new type of appliction for computer assisted language learning (CALL) and computer assisted pronunciation training (CAPT).

The virtual language tutor (VLT), is an embodied conversational agent (ECA) that you can talk to, and that talks back to you. A person that guides, encourages and gives feedback to anyone who wish to develop or improve their language skills. In collaboration with the language unit at KTH, Ville is as of spring 2008 being put to use as a resource for foreign students at KTH taking a web-based language course for elementary Swedish called SWELL. Ville is aiming to be both a research project and a resource for language learners at the same time. A robust incarnation of Ville shall be available for students at KTH at all times, and at the same time the system is being incrementally implemented with new features such as methods for detecting pronunciation errors etc.
