Seminar at Speech, Music and Hearing:

Exploring the Speech of Deaf Individuals

James J. Mahshie, Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C. USA

Abstract

This talk will present a series of studies, both completed and planned, that examine various aspects of speech production of deaf individuals. Included will be research investigating the speech of the deaf as determined by modeling, and an examination of deaf individuals´ perception of their own speech intelligibility. The seminar will also describe research exploring the inverse filtering of nasalized speech, a common speech characteristic of the deaf. Finally, preliminary findings will be described for a study recently initiated that explores the phonatory underpinnings of certain perceived voice qualities.
