Seminar at Speech, Music and Hearing:

Phonetics and the organisation of topic transitions in talk-in-interaction

Rein Ove Sikveland, University of York

Abstract

This presentation is a result of a year´s work of investigating different interactive phenomena, and their phonetics, in naturally occurring talk.

The main basis for this presentation is my recent work on how speakers do topic transitions together, through turn-by-turn talk. We will focus on some resources and practices used when doing topic transitions, that could be seen in terms of ´doing more of the same´, or ´nothing in particular´. This will be done with reference to how topic transitions may be sequentially organised, and in relation to the talker activities involved. Also, I will present some very preliminary phonetic analyses, with which I seek to clarify where my project is heading in the future.

This talk is aimed at listeners with little or no previous knowledge of the study of talk-in-interaction/interactional linguistics, or the relevant methodologies.
