Seminar at Speech, Music and Hearing:

Human-like dialogue systems and speech technology in studies of human conversation

Jens Edlund

Human Communication seminar series

The development of human-like spoken dialogue systems - spoken dialogue systems aimed at maintaining a dialogue that is similar to an equivalent human-human dialogue - is an iterative process. I will talk about the steps involved in an iteration of the process and their outcome - data collection, analysis and recreation (synthesis) - with examples taken from recent studies and from the data collection project Spontal. Each of these steps in some sense examines and describes human communicative behaviour. Whether the primary goal is one of basic research (to describe human behaviour) or one of applied science (to create a spoken dialogue system) is largely a chicken-and-egg question, as the goals need not be mutually exclusive, and I will touch briefly on the issue.
