Models and Prototypes for Natural Interactive Walking

In this talk, achievements gained during the first year of activity within the FET-Open NIW - Natural Interactive Walking European project will be presented. They range from the research and development of physics-based and parametric models for the real time synthesis of haptic and sonic feedback, to the engineering and prototyping of floor- and shoe-based multimodal devices for the actuation of this feedback and sensing of foot actions. Once psychophysically validated, such components are expected to find convenient integration into multimodal interfaces providing everyday ground augmentations to users involved in walking and other locomotion tasks.
