Many people will dispute the idea that musicians reflect upon their actions during a music performance. Regardless of how one´s conception of ´conscious thought´ may be, it seems difficult, however, to contest that a musician´s individual goals for the performance and her idea of the norms for the performance context are important factors in the ensemble´s decisions when trying to navigate out of a coordination problem. In this presentation I will try to describe how norms and personal goals influence different levels of the music performance. My examples will mostly be taken from composition-based performance contexts.
