Seminar at Speech, Music and Hearing:

Binaural Monitoring for Live Music Performances

Elias Zea

Opponent: Jordi Bolíbar

The method presented in this work consists of the design, implementation and evaluation of a monitoring system for live music performances that incorporates directivity radiation patterns and binaural audio. The development of the method is based on four considerations: the directional radiation of musical instruments, a Room Impulse Response (RIR), binaural audio with individualized Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) and motion capture of both the musician\'s head and instrument. Tests with simultaneous musicians performing with this system were carried out in order to evaluate the method, as well as identify errors and possible solutions. Results and conclusions are drawn with a survey provided to the musicians, concerning the accuracy and realism of the system, as well as the perceived degree of enhancement in the musical communication and artistic value; thus pointing towards further research that might be of interest.
