Ville - The Virtual Language TutorThe goal of this project is to develop and test a new type of application for computer assisted language learning (CALL) and computer assisted pronunciation training (CAPT). The virtual language tutor (VLT), is an embodied conversational agent (ECA) that you can talk to, and that talks back to you. A person that guides, encourages and gives feedback to anyone who wish to develop or improve their language skills.
The project is built around speech and language technology research and development conducted at CTT, and pedagogical expertise from the language unit at KTH. A platform is built that contains the agent, "Ville" (Virtual Language Learning Entity) and a set of perception and production exercises. One of the goals of this project is to make Ville as universal as possible. This affects the architechture of the application. It becomes important to separate linguistically universal tools from language specific tools, and to separate general tools from user specific tools. Tools for content providers (e.g teachers) are currently being built, as well as a variety of pronunciation analysis tools.
