KTH Voice Research Centre
OPEN SYMPOSIUM on
Real-time biofeedback in voice therapy and pedagogy
at KTH
on October 23 & 24, 1999
Voice is an elusive phenomenon, hard to describe. Hence it may be quite tricky for a therapist or voice teacher to make his/her instructions on production fully understandable. For example, how should a term like pressed voice be defined so that patients and students realise what it is and how it feels? Technology is rapidly developing, sometimes providing surprisingly clever devices at surprisingly low cost. A major advance is the potential of using real-time biofeedback during therapy or speaking/singing voice training. But what devices are available and what do they do?
We think it would be extremely valuable to hear from experts who have acquired good experience of the devices already available, and of the new devices that might have a great impact in the future.
The KTH Voice Research Centre, established in 1998 thanks to a grant from KTH, has as its primary goal to catalyse the interaction between technicians and clinicians and pedagogues in the area of voice, and to further an insightful use of acoustic voice analysis in research and other related areas. In accordance with this goal, the Centre is arranging a two-day symposium on the use of real-time biofeedback in voice therapy and pedagogy.
The overall idea: to demonstrate "live" a variety of devices useful for biofeedback, and to give you the opportunity to try these devices yourself.
Thus the Centre has invited not only voice scientists and practitioners who use these devices, but also the companies who have produced them. As you can see from the provisional programme, the companies and experts will team up in pairs for the "live" demonstrations. During the long lunch breaks and coffee pauses, you will have ample time to try the devices on your own voice. To facilitate this, lunch baskets will be offered so that no time-consuming searching for restaurants will be needed.
All people actively working or interested in the area of voice therapy and teaching of both the speaking and the singing voice are welcome to attend this symposium. The symposium is free of charge, but all who wish to join must announce their participation by pritning and completing the tear-off strip below and sending it to us by October 1st.
We believe this is a unique and exciting opportunity to gain experience of a variety of voice analysis systems, and we look forward to seeing you in October.
