Hi,

According to the manual, if you open a raw sound file, WaveSurfer tries to guess some properties and displays a dialog giving the user a chance to modify these.

However, for all the headerless raw files that i try to open, a dialog appears with sampling rate 16 kHz and mono so i'm not sure i'm doing the right thing...

How can i see how effective Wavesurfer is in guessing the properties of a raw speech file without a header?

Thanks

These are, AFAIK, default parameters. That's why you can change them.

The idea is that the dialog presents the results after interpretation, if the user has some prior knowledge, the dialog gives an oppurtunity to apply this.
Try downloading these three files, to see some examples

Hi,
thanks for the feedback.

Let me be more precise about my problem.

I have this headerless file, which has 8 kHz sampling frequency.

When i open it , the dialog box appears with 16 kHz selected. According to your post, this must be what wavesurfer guesses. But clearly, as was mentioned in the other post, this must be a default setting since no matter what the sampling rate of the raw file i open, it guesses 16 kHz.

note that if the file has a .raw extention, no dialog box appears. The dialog box appears only if the headerless file has no extention at all.

Thanks,

I think it simple means that Snack was not succesful in determining samle rate, that functionality is not very good, encoding and byte order work much better.
Maybe you did click the "Associcate extension..." tick box in the interpret-dialog, see if there is a definition for .raw in Preferences | Raw files and remove it.
