The Skipproof virtual turntable is an application for the music software Pd (Puredata) and GrIPD. This is free software licenced under GNU/Gpl. Download it and try to scratch for yourself!

Installation:

  • Download and install Pure data extended
  • Download and install GrIPD
  • if not included in extended (to check, start pd and create an object called [gripd]
  • Download and extract "skipproof.zip"
  • Set the path for the file skipproof.gpd (see main window)

The name Skipproof comes from a feature commonly found on scratch records where one sound sample is exactly one revolution long and is repeated for several minutes. If the needle jumps, it will most probably fall down on the same spot in the sound, but in a different groove.

Toasting Skipproof - The Skipproof HCI design project

In the course Musical Communication and Music Technology one project group, Félix Mandoux and Sören Wohlthat, suggested an interesting mapping strategy for Skipproof to be used with a variety of gestural sensors. Mandoux and Wohlthat wrote a patch for Skipproof, allowing for easy mapping between sensors and Skipproof/Pure data. The sensors used for this project are all connected through La Kitchens' Toaster.

Read the project report here, and download the altered Skipproof patch based on an older version.
