STiLL - Speech Technology in Language Learning The European Speech Communication Association (ESCA) has identified the area of Speech Technology in Language Learning as an important area of current research. An ESCA Workshop is being organised in Stockholm with this focus. The contributions should be research oriented, but also concerned with real demonstrable applications (live or video). |

Workshop theme
Speech technology offers great promise in many aspects of language learning by humans. It has already been used in applications such as pronunciation training for hard-of-hearing persons and is now appearing in second language learning. As more advanced speech technology emerges, its usefulness will increase. The technology includes speech recognition, synthesis, analysis, manipulation and visualisation. In relation to the technology, new methods in language learning need to be discussed and developed. We intend this workshop to be an interdisciplinary meeting point for research oriented persons. Contributions relating to basic research, method development, system design and evaluation are welcome. |
Format of the workshop
This will be an international workshop with a limited number of active participants, i.e. priority will be given to persons with accepted papers. Each session will be introduced by a tutorial presentation by an invited expert. Most papers will be presented in plenary sessions with time for demonstration and discussion. Other papers will be presented in poster sessions followed by plenary discussions. An exhibition is planned both for commercial systems and research prototypes. |
Proceedings
The contributions to the workshop will be published in a Workshop Proceedings which will be available to participants at the time of the workshop. |
Workshop site
STiLL will take place in a conference centre located in a rural area on the Baltic shore one hour's drive from Stockholm. Bus transportation to and from the centre will be provided before and after the workshop. Detailed logistic information will be distributed to all registered participants. |
