Kjell Gustafson's homepage - Professional background

Outline of my professional background:

  • I studied Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) and Linguistics at the University of Oslo.

  • I was at the Queen's College, at the University of Oxford, England, in 1974-75, studying Classics and Comparative Philology.

  • I worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Classics, now part of the Institute of Classics and Romance Studies (Klassisk og romansk institutt), University of Oslo, until 1980.

  • Between 1981 and 1983 I studied Classics at the Queen's College, Oxford, and, between 1981 and 1986, Phonetics at the Phonetics Laboratory in Oxford.

  • In 1986-87 I was a lecturer in Phonetics and Linguistics at Lancashire Polytechnic in Preston, England, now The University of Central Lancashire.

  • From 1987 to 1989 I was a lecturer in Phonetics and Linguistics at the Institute of Phonetics and Linguistics, now the Section for Linguistic Studies of the Institute of Linguistics and Literature, University of Bergen.

  • In 1989-90 I was a lecturer of English Linguistics and Phonetics at Telemark College in Bø in Telemark, Norway.

Since the summer of 1990 I have lived in Sweden and work part-time at Acapela Group Sweden AB, which develops text-to-speech synthesis systems (previously known as Infovox AB, which was once a division of Telia Promotor AB, which no longer exists as a company), and at the Department of Speech, Music and Hearing, KTH, Stockholm, working as a linguist-phonetician at both places. My research interests in the past twenty years have focused on phonetic and phonological aspects of linguistics, especially prosody, including the structure of poetic metre (metrics). In the last ten years I have concentrated on the interface between fonetics/phonology and speech technology, especially speech synthesis. I have also done work on aspects of syntax, especially the structure of subordinate clauses.
