What is RealSimPLE?
RealSimPLE is a project that aims to create a teaching platform for interesting acoustics experiments at the High School, College and University levels. A novel feature is the live interaction between benchtop reality and computer simulations.
How does RealSimPLE benefit the teacher?
Most students have an interest in music, so using musical instruments as an inroad to acoustics and physics provides a positive incentive. This website gives you free access to insteresting and enlightening experiments in music acoustics, developed by leading institutions in the field. The experimental materials are designed to be inexpensive, easy to find in stores, and easy to assemble.
Who develops RealSimPLE?
RealSimPLE is a joint project of the Department of Speech Music and Hearing (TMH) at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden; and the CCRMA (Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics) at Stanford University. The project was funded 2005-2007 by the Wallenberg Global Learning Network.
What do I need to run a RealSimPLE experiment?
All you need is a computer with a sound card, the free software packages PureData and Adobe Acrobat Reader, some simple parts, and some time to construct the experiment materials according to the construction manuals.
How many experiments are available?
Currently there are three sets of experiments available, on the oscilloscope/spectroscope, on the monochord and on pipes. More modules will be added as the project progresses. An introductory module on evaluating the computer's sound card can also be used as a lab exercise.
