From page 41: Modern, alternative uses of the turntable as an instrument have typically been to make physical alterations to one part of the playback system. Such alterations include placing other physical objects than vinyl records on the turntable, augmenting the pickup system with other objects than the needle, using other mechanical devices than the turntableÕs motor system, and preparing the vinyl by for instance assembling a new record from splinters of shattered ones or drilling a new, off-center hole so the record will not spin circularly.
Christian Marclay playing treated vinyl records live on four turntables. At 2:30, the second turntable plays a record with off-center hole. Other techniques he uses are drumming on the record to create short silent gaps, and scraping the needle sideways.
