Curriculum Vitae for ERIK V JANSSON                     May 1999

Born in Uppsala,  Sweden on October 28,  1941. Married in 1971 to Christina Fälth.  Two children, Mikael born in 1972 and Elisabeth born in 1976.

Professional education at the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, Stockholm  Sweden 1962  to  1966 resulting in a Master of Science degree  in electronics.  Thereafter the waveequation was  studied theoretically  and experimentally under professor  Arthur  Benade  at Physics department of Case Western Reserve University,  Cleveland  Ohio,  USA.  At the return to Sweden and the Department  of Speech  Communication  and  Music Acoustics,  Jansson  and  Frans Fransson  developed  the  STL-Ionophone  invented  by   Fransson. Thereafter Jansson worked together with Dr Nils-Erik Molin at the department of Physics II and Institute of Optical Research at KTH employing hologram interferometry to map eigenmodes of the violin and the guitar.  Furthermore Jansson mapped eigenmodes of the air cavity of the violin and the guitar. All these works are included in  Jansson's  Dr thesis in 1973.  Thereafter  Jansson  developed Long-Time-Average-spectra for analyses of musical sounds together with  Johan  Sundberg and  developed an admittance sond  for  reording  of mechanical input admittance.  All the developed  techiques  have  been applied to the analyses of guitars and  lately violins  in coorporation with J Alonso  Moral.   Jansson have  started  investigations of the piano together  with  Anders Askenfelt.Cooperation with Prof Molin and his Division of Experimental Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology has been reeastablished. Methods to determine properties of tone-wood has been developed. Modes (ODS:es) of transients and steady stae vibrations have been mapped.  Together with Benedykt Niewczyk, a fourth generation violin maker from Poznan, Poland and the violinplayer Professor Lars Frydén, Jansson is thoroughly investigating relations between the construction and the quality of the violin.

Jansson has published  about 30 scientific papers in international reviewed journals, about 30 in the Quarterly Report of the KTH TMH department, about 30 technical papers, and some 30  popular papers. Jansson has presented some 50 papers (14 invited) at international professional conferences. Three scientific papers has been republished as “Benchmark Papers in Acoustics”, and fourteen scientific papers are published in “Research Papers in Violin Acoustics 1973-1993”.

Fellow of Acoustical Society of India. Member of the Acoustical Society of America,  the Catgut Acoustical  Society,  the  Swedish  Acoustical Society and  the  Swedish Society of Musicology.
Member of the Committee for Acoustics of Music, and the committee for Bowed String Instruments at the Royal  Swedish  Academy  of  Music.  Editor of the  Musical Acoustics  publications (together with J. Sundberg).
